The city of Bremen is located in Northern Germany, just over an hour from Hamburg and just over two from the Netherlands. It’s famously associated with the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale about the “Bremen Town Musicians” — a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster who embark on a journey to the city. There’s a well-known statue in Bremen commemorating these characters, which has become one of the city’s most iconic symbols. It’s located within the beautifully preserved medieval city center.
Bremen was a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful economic and defensive alliance of merchant guilds and market towns in Northern Europe from the late Middle Ages. This heritage still shapes Bremen’s economy and culture. Bremen is a large city with many facets - history, tradition, science, nature and culture - which combine to create an ever-fascinating experience.
Today, Bremen also excels for its cycling culture, with miles of bike lanes and a vibrant community of cyclists. Participants and spectators alike have the opportunity to explore Bremen’s rich history, cultural landmarks, and renowned hospitality, making GFNY Bremen not just a race, but a complete cycling holiday.
The 112 km competitive long route is mostly flat and fast—but the wind will likely challenge you. The pre-race expo, start, finish, and post-race festivities all take place at the historic Tabakquartier. From there, the opening 4 km of the race are “neutralized,” meaning the peloton follows a lead vehicle at a controlled pace. Once you reach the airport area, the race is on.
From km 4 to 18, the course winds through small roads with numerous turns. This section will stretch the field early and lets you take full advantage of the closed roads. After passing under the A1 Autobahn, you enter the main loop, which you’ll complete twice. Open fields and traditional farmsteads alternate with sections through forest. While there are no major climbs, frequent false flats will test you. A 500 m stretch of cobbles along a historic farm-turned-restaurant adds a classic touch.
After the second loop, you return via the same roads as the outbound section. The race’s timing finish is at km 106, where a long straight offers ideal conditions for a sprint. “Timing finish” means this is where your official race time stops. The final 6 km, leading back to the celebratory finish at the Tabakquartier, are neutralized and ridden at a casual pace to ensure safety. Use this section as a cool-down along the scenic Ochtum River, enjoying the moment with fellow riders. Be sure to cross the final finish line at Tabakquartier—only then is your race considered complete and you will be listed as a finisher. That’s where you’ll receive your GFNY finisher medal, post-race meal, and where the awards ceremony takes place.
The non-competitive medium route follows the same course but includes only one loop. Riders on this route also receive timing, a finisher medal, and the post-race meal. However, there are no awards in this category, and results will be listed alphabetically rather than by finish time.
LONG COURSE IS A COMPETITION: Only the finishers of the long course are eligible for category rankings and Overall and Podium awards. If you want to race and be ranked in your category, you must complete the long course. Top 20% of finishers in each age group earn a spot in the Qualifier Corral at every GFNY World event.
MEDIUM COURSE IS NOT A COMPETITION: The riders of the medium course will be provided their start-to-finish time, but will not be ranked by finish time. All finish times will be listed in alphabetical order.
THE JERSEY: All riders receive the official GFNY Bremen race jersey, which is mandatory attire at the race. The jersey is designed in NYC and Made in Italy.
CHIP TIMING: GFNY Bremen is a timed race. Each athlete has their own timing chip, which starts right after you cross the start line and stops when you cross the finish line. Timing results will be available at gfny.cc/results.
FINISHER MEDAL: Every GFNY Bremen finisher receives a medal, no matter which distance they complete. All finishers also earn a “Finish” towards their 3x2025 GFNY medal or the 10x medal. Go to gfny.com/medals for more information on GFNY’s multi-finisher medals.
GFNY Bremen serves as the GFNY Europe Championship.
The top 20% of finishers in each age group will start in the Qualifier Corral at all GFNYs for the next 380 days.
Overall Champions (man and woman) of the GFNY Europe Championship win flights, hotel and entry to GFNY World Championship NYC 2026 to compete for the GFNY World Championship crown.
